Veterinary Clinics in San Antonio: What to Look For

If you love your pets and are working to find them a veterinary clinic in San Antonio, you are making a very important decision. The process for selecting a veterinary clinic is similar to that of choosing your family doctor.

Factors to consider when selecting a veterinary clinic in San Antonio:

Do the doctors at the veterinary clinic have good “bedside manners”? Do both you and your pets feel comfortable with both the doctors and staff? You should be able to ask the questions you need to ask and not feel rushed. If you don’t understand the vet or staff’s explanations, let them know! Instead of using technical or medical terms—you need them to “speak your language” — the language of a layperson. If you are more comfortable speaking Spanish than English, look for a bilingual veterinarian. Of course, all the staff should be pleasant, gentle, and efficient.

Does it matter how long a veterinarian has been practicing? Not necessarily — younger veterinarians who’ve recently completed their formal education may have the most up-to-date information. However, older veterinarians have more practical experience. All veterinarians should stay up-to-date on advances in and expansion of veterinary knowledge.

Do the veterinarians keep up with the latest knowledge? These days, because of the Internet, veterinarians have access to their colleagues from all over the world and should continually take advantage of those connections. Just like other professionals, veterinarians should be confident enough in their own knowledge to get help from — and make referrals to — colleagues when an animal’s care requires special expertise.

What do other customers say about the veterinary clinic? Enthusiastic recommendations from your neighbors and friends are important, as are warnings or complaints. Ask around to see which veterinary clinics are most often mentioned favorably. Check your favorite search engine for a veterinary clinic’s rating and reviews. Be sure to read the comments!

Is the veterinary clinic expensive? This can be difficult to tell in advance and it’s usually expected that you will ask about costs if budget is an issue. If you have any concerns, make sure to ask for price estimates before the veterinary clinic provides services, especially if your pet is seriously ill or getting on in years.

Is the clinic conveniently located? You’ll need to take each of your animals for a visit to the veterinary clinic at least once a year, so do yourself a favor and select a clinic near your home.

Will the hours of operation work for your schedule? Most emergency vets are more expensive than those that close in the evening, over the weekends, and during holidays. Even if you are totally satisfied with a veterinary clinic, you should know in advance where to take your animal(s) if an emergency arises outside your regular vet’s hours of operation.

Your Veterinary Clinic: What Does the Facility Say about its Quality?

You expect a warm, well-organized and clean environment at your primary care physician’s office and exam rooms — and you should look for the same quality in a veterinary clinic in San Antonio.

If you visit a veterinary clinic during non-peak hours, you should be allowed to tour the entire facility. Make sure all the animals have fresh water and food and adequate space. Although a veterinary clinic can be very busy, you should still take note of whether the clinical staff is maintaining a healthy, calm environment at a comfortable temperature and that there are enough employees to provide the animals great care.
